Show Jumping - Dress Code

Our Novice Challenge team at the AreaPony Club have some strict dress rules for competing - please read through them before going to a competition - in particular for Area level competitions and above.

Our Novice Challenge team is pictured - turned out for Show Jumping at the Area 19 competition this year - ready for the tack & turnout inspection (points to remember for turnout are given at the bottom of the page).

What we've put on this page is a summary of important Show Jumping Dress rules - please read a copy of the full rules if you're going to the Area Events - as you will be asked to change incorrect items at inspection.

Rider

  1. Hats - hats must now be checked and tagged to take part in competitions
    1. As for all disciplines they must be marked with one of the following:
      1. PAS 015:1998
      2. AS/NZS 3838 - 1998 or AS/NZS 3838 2009
      3. Snell EN 2001 or EN 1384:1996 or BS EN 1384:1997
        (Snell EN 2001 and PAS 015:1998 being to a higher standard)
    2. It must also bear the CE mark and a one of these quality symbols:
      1. BSI Kitemark
      2. the SAI Global symbol
      3. the official Snell label with number
    3. Hats must be worn correctly fastened at all times when mounted
    4. Hat covers - dark blue or black.
    5. If your hat comes off or undone, while riding - replace it/do it up before continuing. (without penalty). If in the middle of a double, treble or multiple obstacle, the obstacle may be negotiated first.
      The clock shall not be stopped.
  2. Hair - long hair should be secured appropriately
  3. Jackets - Tweed, navy blue or black jackets with a Pony Club tie or stock
  4. Breeches - White or Cream.
  5. Jewellery - not allowed
  6. Whips - must not exceeding 75 cm (291/2") or less than 45 cm (171/2") in length.
    Riders may not hit their horse/pony before the start of the course.
  7. Spurs - Only blunt spurs made of metal and without rowels or sharp edges may be worn. If the spurs are curved, the curve must be downwards. The shank must point straight to the back and be not more than 3 cm long.
    Proof of DC's permission to wear spurs must be carried (signed letter from DC)
  8. Footwear - Standard Riding or Jodhpur Boots
  9. Half Chaps - plain black or brown half chaps with no tassels worn with standard riding or Jodhpur Boots of the same colour
  10. Button Holes - not allowed
  11. Prize-giving - mounted or dismounted, competitors must be correctly dressed in their competition riding clothes
  12. Responsibility - It is the responsibility of competitors that their dress and saddlery are in accordance with the Rules. Contravention may entail elimination

 

Horse

  1. Saddlery & Equipment - shall be correctly fitted
    For safety reasons leather bridles are recommended.
  2. Saddles - Brown or black; type optional
  3. Saddle Cloths - Plain saddle cloths, including 'Polypads', with no Logo, writing or piping of a different colour. They may be white, cream, navy, brown or black
  4. Stirrups - should be of the correct size to suit the rider's boots (7 mm (1/4") clearance on either side)
  5. Bits
    1. Bitless bridles & hackamores are not allowed
    2. Pelhams or curb bits may only be used with both bit and bridoon reins, or with a single rein attached to a leather 'D' joining the bit and bridoon rings
    3. Kimblewicks must have the reins attached to the main 'D' only
    4. Gag snaffles must have smooth mouthpieces, and may be used with one or two pairs of reins
    5. Continental & American Gags with single, plain or double-jointed smooth mouthpieces, with one or two pairs of reins or leather 'D's. The length of the shank, measured from top to bottom, must not exceed 19 cm (7.5"). With no curb attachments to these bits. Elevators (which have a fixed mouthpiece) are not permitted
    6. Myler Bits - permitted for jumping phases are -
      1. level one bits and level two Mullen barrel bit with regular mouthpiece (i.e. not twisted)., a loose "D" or eggbut ring or full cheeks
      2. Kimblewick or Pleham with a comfort snaffle mouthpiece.
      3. No bit with a shank longer than 19cm (7.5") is permitted
    7. Bits must be used in the manufactured condition without any additional covering to or on any part
  6. Martingales - must be either Irish, Standing*, Running or Bib.
    *Standing Martingales may be attached only to the portion of the noseband fitted above the bit
  7. Nosebands - Cavesson, Drop, Grakle, Flash or Kineton
  8. Market Harboroughs and running, draw or check reins of any kind are forbidden. (A running, draw or check rein is one which is attached to the saddle, girth, martingale or breast plate on the horse).
    Split reins are not allowed.
  9. No Blinkers
  10. String, twine or cord in or round the horse's mouth is forbidden
  11. Bit Guards - must be made entirely of rubber and smooth on both sides
  12. Saddlery and Gadgets which are not allowed in the competition will result in elimination
  13. The Official Steward has absolute discretion to forbid the use of any bit, gadget or spur which he considers cruel
  14. Lungeing - is permitted in side reins, but not bearing, check or balancing reins
  15. Saddlery and equipment used during the inspection must be the same as that worn throughout the competition, except by permission of the Official Steward
  16. Stallions are only permitted with written permission from DC and identifying disc.

Sponsorship
In the case of horses, riders and owners, no form of advertising and this includes a sponsor's name may appear in the programme, on the Public Address or on the competitor's or horse's clothing and equipment at any Pony Club functions. This does not preclude the usual acknowledgement to Sponsors of an event as a whole or any part of it, i.e. fences, etc., or the wearing of clothing for horses or riders, presented by Sponsors of the Championships or Area Competitions in the current or previous years.

Some points Turnout Judges look for:

Horse Rider

a) Healthy appearance
b) Well groomed
c) Appropriately trimmed
d) Tidy mane and tail
e) Well shod
f) Clean, correctly fitted saddlery, in good repair
g) If used, correct and tidy boots and bandages
h) Proper use of keepers, martingale stops, etc.
i) Polished bits, stirrups and other metal ware
j) Any other points which occur

a) Tidy hair and hat
b) Clean, workmanlike clothing
c) Smart shirt with tidy collar
d) Neatly tied stocks or ties
e) Garter straps (when boots permit)
f) Clean, correctly fitting spurs and straps
g) Clean badge
h) No gimmicks which offend the eye
