Show
Jumping (SJ) is run in an arena over a course of numbered fences which
can be knocked down as they sit on cups.
The Course
There are normally 7 - 10 obstacles to jump in the course
which have to be jumped in number order.
Remember to walk
the course before the start of the class.
The course is built using 'fill-in material' so that the fences look solid and inviting and will include a range of fences:
- Upright fences
- Spread / Parallel fences
- Related distance fences (2 fences a measured distance apart)
- Doubles (2 fences a measured distance of 1 or 2 strides apart)
And in more advanced competitions may include: - Trebles
- Triple bars
- Water trays or water jump
The Competition
Warming-Up - a warm-up arena will be available with
practice fences provided.
The practice fences
will be marked with red and white flags (or stands) - to be jumped with
the red flag on the right
and the white on the left.
- Individual Competitions
- The First Round should be fairly easy - with a few of the
fences up to the maximum height
Watch out
for the height of the jumps which should be given on the schedule
for the event - Jump off - usually competitors who jump clear, or are tied
on penalties for the first six placings, go forward to a Jump-Off
against the clock - over a shortened track with the fences
raised - with the fastest clear round winning
- The First Round should be fairly easy - with a few of the
fences up to the maximum height
- Team Show Jumping
A team is made up of four - with the best three scores in each round counting.- First Round - should be fairly easy - with a few of the fences up to the maximum height and the aim of getting most teams round without any problems
- Second Round - team members jump over a raised, more difficult course to ensure a result and avoid having too many teams in the jump-off. Minor placings are often decided in this round using the aggregate time of the best 3 team members
- Jump-Off - the teams tying go forward to a Jump-Off against the clock - over a shortened track with the fences raised - with the fastest clear round winning
Remember to wait
for the bell before starting your round
Jumping Penalties (from January 1st 2003)
The aim is to jump a clear round (completing the course without penalty).
Any mistakes made are penalised by the judges - major penalties are shown in the table below:

Time penalties - when an obstacle is displaced as the result of a disobedience/fall a time penalty of 4 seconds is added to the time taken to complete the round before the calculation of any time faults. (Exception to this rule - after a fall, if the fence is replaced before the rider remounts no time penalties are added).
